Privacy, in plain words
Some of our learners are teenagers. We built this to collect as little as possible.
What we store
- Your account: first name (or nickname), email, and a securely hashed password.
- Three onboarding answers: your coding experience, your goal, and the course you chose to start with.
- Your learning: which lessons and exercises you've done, the code you submit when you press Check, your written reflections, XP, streaks and badges. Reflections are read by the team to improve lessons.
- Your time zone, so a “day” in your streak is your day.
- Feedback you choose to send about a lesson.
- Learning events: a short record when you start or finish a lesson, pass or fail a check, or open a hint. We keep these ourselves and use them to find the lessons where people get stuck.
- Server logs: like any website, our hosting provider logs each request (address, page, time) for a short period, to keep the site running and to stop abuse.
What we don't do
- No advertising trackers, no third-party analytics, no selling data.
- We don't ask for your birth date, school, phone number or address.
- Your code runs in your own browser. It isn't executed on our servers.
Third parties
The Python engine (Pyodide) is downloaded from the jsDelivr CDN the first time you run Python code, so that CDN sees a standard web request from your browser. The C++ compiler and the fonts are served by us. The site is hosted on Heroku, and password-reset emails are sent through an email provider.
Cookies
Two, both necessary: one keeps you signed in, one protects forms from forgery. Neither is used for tracking.
Your control
You can delete your account and all your learning data at any time from Settings. Questions: hello@understand.ma.
